How far back do Lake Powell records go?

Official Lake Powell daily water-level records begin in December 1963. The annual statistics above summarize 22,940 archived daily observations. The recent chart, seasonal comparison and historical table all use the same water-level source, but the annual and monthly summaries average or select recorded daily values. About these records →

Why levels change over time

Spring and early-summer snowmelt across the Upper Colorado River Basin can increase inflows. Reservoir releases and precipitation patterns influence water level across the rest of the year. Long-term drought, warming and operating decisions also affect storage.

How to compare years fairly

For meaningful comparisons, check whether you are viewing an individual daily reading, a monthly average or a yearly high or low. Always compare the same type of measurement and elevation reference.

All water-level charts on this site now use the same official daily source and NGVD29 elevation reference. Read about the source and dates ↗.
